Guruvandana 2011

Every year disciples of Pt Gopinath (a very senior Sitarist) conduct the Guruvandana Programme to pay tribute to their teacher. This year's programme was held on 31-Jul-2011. We were blessed to have hosted it in our home.

The programme started at 10' o clock in the morning with invocation of devine vedic chanting by Chi Vishnu Prakash. Vishnu chanted two shanti mantras to seek blessing from Lord Ganesha. He also chanted a Ghana for another shanti mantra

Next was a Purandara dasa song by Chi. Samarth which he sang in raag Bhairagi Bhairav (Revathi) with full of devotion. Samarth is the son of Shri Kiran who is an accomplished tabla artist.

It was followed by two bhajans by Chi. Anirudh. First one was in melodious peaceful Madhumad Sarang . The second was a Meera Bhajan in Puria Dhanashree. Accompanied on Harmonium was none other than Guruji himself. He was accompanied on Tabla by Chi. Vishnu.

Next came rendition of Raag Shuddha Sarang by Smt Sarvamangala which is one of the senior disciples of Pt Gopinath. Accompanied on tabla was Shri Kiran. Shuddha sarang

Following this was a performance by yours truly. I played a very short Dhrut composition in Raag Megh. I was fortunate to have Meghashyam, a young and fine tabla artist accompanying me on tabla.

Little Ananya sang the "Kayau Shri Gauri Karunalahari", the national anthem of erstwhile Mysore State with perfection of the English notes.

Kum. Hamsini, currently the youngest student of Shri Gopinath, played Raag Bhupali with precision. Chi Vishnu accompanied her on tabla

Shri Jose played Kalavathi followed by a morning raaga Nat Bhairav by Shri Srinivas. He was accompanied by Shri Kiran on Tabla.

Smt Jyoti Shyam is the oldest student of Pt Gopinath and she's a performing artist. She played Bilaskhani Todi. The composition she chose was of Late Pt Sheshadri Gawai who is the Guru of her Guru. She was accompanied on tabla by Shri Kiran.

Next to follow was a an excellent performance by Smt Sumarani who is also a senior disciple of Pt Gopinath. She has been a performing artist and constantly appears in TV. She played the beautiful Yamani Bilawal. She was accompanied on tabla by Shri Kiran

The final item was by the Master himself. Guruji played Raag Behag with intricate patterns. He was accompanied on Sitar by Smt Rekha, another senior student and on table by Sri Kiran.
